Glossary of Terms

Emoticons: A series of keyboard characters used to convey emotion. We have compiled a list of common emoticons you may use to spice up your e-mail or text messaging here.

Flame: To make eccentric, insulting criticisms or remarks (generally by e-mail) meant to incite anger or belittle the recipient. To express a strongly held opinion without holding back any emotion.

Harvest: To capture an email address, either from a webpage or reply to spam, or from a CD with a bulk email list. An email address that has been harvested may be used to receive spam, or to send it without the owners knowledge.

Netiquette: Code of etiquette for communicating by computer on the Internet. A list of netiquette protocol guidelines is addressed here.

Newbie: Someone new to the world of computers or the Internet. Don't worry if you're a Newbie. We were all there at one point.

Spam: Spam is the e-mail equivalent of junk mail. Officially, Spam is known as Unsolicited Commercial E-mail (UCE). Some words of advice regarding Spam can be found here.
